This is made exceptionally and well thought out. Selection of wood is beautiful, and the cork screw opening snaps into place And so does the knife with its beautiful Damascus finish. Easy to open with the small knob attached so you don't need to use your fingernails. Sure you can find a cheaper tool that will do the job, but this one will do it with style.
The Sommelier Knife is very good looking and quality. The shape is easy to hold on hand and the foil cutter is very sharp.
Great looking and exceptional quality product. Would highly recommend. I prefer non-serrated blades as the foils look cleaner when cut so this is the perfect waiters friend for me. Blade retains a good level of sharpness with heavy use and the corkscrew is a great for both traditional and larger bottles. Use this alongside an Ah-so or Durand for older corks and you have the perfect pair of openers.
I have been thinking of getting a fancy wine opener and have been eyeing a Laguiole corkscrew. I accidentally find at JCK these corkscrews and bought two - one with a plain blade and one with a Damascus blade. They are better in workmanship than the Laguiole and have better blades, especially the Damascus one. The plane blade version is serrated and the Damascus version has a smooth edge. Both get the jobs done. The corkscrew and the lever work well they are quite big and needed large knife cases. I can now open wine bottles like a sommelier :-)
Like any high end corkscrews, you really need to break into it, season it. Brand new out of box, the lever and screw can have a little resistance, making wine opening a little tough. Once seasoned, this is the best corkscrew I've over owned. The knife can be resharpened, so once blunt, you don't have to toss it aside. The knife not being serrated, feels smoother when cutting the foil, and it wouldn't catch on the foil, ripping the whole thing out. The rimgs between the "screw thread" is well spaced, so ******** in and pulling the cork out is relatively easy and not as damaging to the Cork. Overall, I love this. Great buy.
